Dungannon District planning approvals hit new low

PLANNING permissions in the Dungannon District continue to hit new lows with just 21 outline applications granted in the past year.

New figures released by the Department of Environment show that planning permissions in the local district have plummeted by more than two thirds from a total of 90 in 2007.

In the neighbouring Cookstown district, outline planning approvals fell from 42 in 2007/08 to 18 in 2012/13.

Over the last 3 years the overall number of planning applications received by the department has steadily declined from 19,557 in 2009/10 to 13,680 in 2011/12.

Planning applications for residential development have fallen by over a quarter while commercial developments, which include retail and office developments, continued to fall sharply with a drop of 54 per cent compared with the third quarter 2010, from 337 applications to 155.

However, the figures show that staff at the local planning office in Omagh have been amongst the busiest in Northern Ireland.

Dungannon people are lodging more plans than almost anywhere else.

Whereas there has been a 30 percent drop in the number of homes getting planning permission across the province, planners were inundated with 624 planning applications for Dungannon District in the last year, the third highest outside Belfast.

Only Down and Lisburn district councils had higher totals.

By comparison, Cookstown had 442 planning applications, and Armagh 554. However the local total is well done from 2010 when there were 1003 applications lodged.

As well as residential and commercial applications, the submitted plans included proposals for wind farm and single wind turbines,

Dungannon District currently has the highest number of wind farms of any council area in Northern Ireland. There are five wind farms sited in the local district, with Coleraine District the next highest with four.
