DUNGANNON RENTED HOMES DECLARED UNFIT TO LIVE IN
Dungannon has a high number of HMOs unfit for habitation
A TOTAL of 14 rented houses in the Dungannon District have been served with notices because of substandard living conditions.
At a time when more and more local people are choosing to rent a home, the new figures from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive present a stark warning.
However, the substandard notices, issued by the HE, only relate to houses of multiple occupation (HMO), where tenants rent a room rather than the whole property, so the true number of poor quality rented homes may be even greater.
The private rented sector now accounts for roughly one in six dwellings in the local district. HMOs account for a margin of that sector.
There are 103 HMOs officially registered in the Dungannon District, one of the highest levels in Northern Ireland, but the Housing Executive estimates the true number to be much higher.
HMOs are widely acknowledged to be at greater risk than single family households and it is considered necessary to monitor them for fire safety, hygiene and structural maintenance.
Sinn Fin MLA Bronwyn McGahan has said that more needs to be done to ensure that landlords live up to their responsibility of maintaining proper standards in rented houses.
“With the current social housing crisis in the Dungannon area more and more people are turning to private landlords and while the majority of homes are in good order some of these properties should not be allowed to be rented.
