Education board pays biggest bill for taxis

ALMOST £2m has been spent on taxis in the past year by the Southern Education and Library Board, the highest total of the North’s five education boards.

Taxi fares for pupil and staff hit a total of £1,887,000 while the cost of running buses for local pupils reached £16,588,000.

The outlay was released last week by Education Minister John O’Dowd after a written Assembly question.

The North Eastern Library Board had the next highest total at £1,663,000, while Belfast had the lowest at £977,000.

Northern Ireland Education and Library Boards have paid out more than £38m in taxi fares to ferry pupils to and from schools in the last five years,

In total, the five Education and Library Boards have run up a bill of £310m on transport costs since 2002, with 12% of this figure spent on taxis.
