Father’s request to witness birth denied

A JUDGE has denied an application by a Dungannon man - accused of assaulting his pregnant partner - to be present at the birth of his first child.

Hugo Rodridgues, 35, from Northland Village, is charged with assaulting the woman on May 2, and damaging picture frames belonging to her.

He is also accused of possessing heroin and possessing heroin with intent to supply on the same date.

Rodridgues’ lawyer submitted the application before a sitting of Dungannon Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

According to the lawyer, the compassionate bail application was to ask for Rodridgues to be allowed to attend the birth of his first child.

The lawyer explained that Rodridgues is currently on remand in prison accused of assaulting his partner, who is due to give birth by elective Caesarean Section.

District Judge, John Meehan, refused the application and adjourned the case again until September 7.
