Free workshop to show ways of beating stress

AN event in Galbally will look at the causes of stress and provide practical tools for dealing with stressful situations.

The Discover How to Renew, Review and Relax event, which is due to take place at Galbally Community Centre on Tuesday, February 26, has been organised by Closing the Gap, Investing for Health and Dungannon Council.

The free half-day workshop, also funded by the Public Health Agency (PHA), will run from 10.30am to 1.30pm and is open to all.

By the end of the programme participants will have a better understanding of how the body reacts to stress, learn about individual responses to stress, develop coping skills and use practical tools for everyday use.

The Mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council, Cllr Phelim Gildernew, explained:

“Our bodies usually cope well with short-term pressures, but too much stress for too long can make us unwell.

“The first step towards managing stress better is to realise when things are getting on top of us, and by coming along to Renew, Review and Relax this will help support people to take those first steps.”

Mark McBride, from the PHA said: “The Public Health Agency works in partnership to promote good health and emotional wellbeing. We are pleased to fund this event.

“Stress can affect anyone, and it doesn’t just make you feel bad, it can also be bad for your health.

“If you feel stressed, it is important to take practical steps to deal with it. Simple things, such as eating well, sleeping well, being active and cutting out things that are bad for us as well as learning to take time out to relax and have fun, and trying to think positively, can all be very beneficial.

“That is why I would encourage everyone to attend the Renew, Review and Relax workshop, to find new ways to deal with stressful situations in a supportive environment.“

Closing the Gap is a Health Inequalities Project delivered by Southern Group Environmental Health Committee in conjunction with the five Southern Group Councils.

It provides information and advice on local health and well being services, including drugs and alcohol, sexual health and teenage pregnancy, smoking cessation and matters relating to men’s health.
