GILDERNEW TO BE NEW MAYOR OF BOROUGH
Cllr Phelim Gildernew INTT1311-183JS
COUNCILLOR Phelim Gildernew is to be the new Mayor of the Borough.
The Brantry man’s appointment will be ratified at tonight’s (Monday) Annual General Meeting of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council.
Councillor Gildernew succeeds former mayor Kenneth Reid in what is set to be a significant year for the Dungannon District.
Party Colleague, Councillor Padraig Quinn said paid tribute to the incoming Mayor: “Phelim comes from a strong Republican family, and is a long-standing member of Dungannon Council representing the Blackwater community.
“Sinn Fein decided that given the depth of his experience he would be the best person to lead the council in what will be a very busy year, especially with the opening of the Hill of the O’Neill (formerly known as Castle Hill) and the Public Realm Scheme in Dungannon.
“Phelim has always been very inclusive and has worked hard to represent all sections of the local community. He has chairmed many committees, including the Blackwater Regeneration Partnership and the Dungannon Policing Partnership, and we felt that he would be the perfect candidate.”
Councillor Gildernew is a member of Blackwater Regional Partnership Board, Caledon Regeneration Partnership, the Community Safety Partnership and Dungannon & South Tyrone District Policing Partnership.
It is believed that the DUP’s Frances Burton will be elected as Deputy Mayor.
