THE highlight of the marching season is fast approaching and local Orangemen will be out in force for this year’s Twelfth demonstrations on Thursday.

There will be 18 principal venues across Northern Ireland as the Loyal Orders prepare to commemorate the Battle of the Boyne including two venues in East Tyrone.

Three flagship Twelfths have been chosen this year. They are Carrickfergus, Ballynahinch and Enniskillen, but Pomeroy is sure to be thronged as Orangemen from across the area take to the streets.

The Pomeroy parade is expected to be the biggest parade in Tyrone with seventy lodges from seven districts taking part.

Among those making their way through the historic plantation town are Orangemen from the Pomeroy, Killyman, Stewartstown, Cookstown, Castlecaulfield, Benburb and Coagh districts.

Aughnacloy will host Orangemen and their supporters from the Clogher Valley in one of the smaller Twelfth celebrations.

Two districts will take part, namely the Fivemiletown and Annahoe lodges.

The principal venue for Mid and West Tyrone Orangemen will be Castlederg, as lodges from Sixmilecross, Fintona, Omagh, Newtownstewart, Killen and Strabane take part in the annual demonstrations.

Police are advising Pomeroy residents that the Tanderagee Road will be closed to through traffic from noon to 4.30pm. An alternative route around the village should be used.

The border village of Aughnacloy will close to through traffic at 11am and re-open at 5pm. Motorists intending to use the A5/N2 cross-border road must plan an alternative route. Cross-border traffic can use the Old Monaghan Road from Clogher, or Middletown, via Armagh, or Caledon. Diversions will be in place for local traffic.

In Enniskillen the Town Centre and the Wellington Road will close to through traffic from 11am.

Traffic travelling from the A4 towards the Sligo Road or the Shore Road will be diverted via Dublin Road, Irvinestown Road, Cornagrade Road and onwards, and vice-versa. Cross-border traffic to or from North Fermanagh will also follow the Cornagrade Road route.
