Hot food proposal continues to stir debate

A DECISION to approve an application to allow the sale of hot food at Anne Street in Dungannon for a period of three months before being reviewed, was due to be brought before the full monthly meeting of Dungannon Council last night, Monday.

A council sub-committee, on a recorded vote which was carried by 9 to 1, proposed that a street trading licence be granted at the location with a restricted closing time of 1.30am.

At last month’s full council meeting, DUP councillor, Maurice Morrow, expressed concerns about late night trading in the area, and the original proposal to grant the licence was put back to be discussed further.

At the latest sub-committee meeting on the subject, one member felt that should the licence be granted, it was “opening up the potential for the same problems to arise again”.

Other councillors said that, since no new information had been brought to the committee, and that since the area is designated with no restrictions on the type of trading, it was proposed by Independent Republican councillor, Barry Monteith, and Cllr Dessie Donnelly of Sinn Fein, to grant the licence for three months with a closing time of 1.30am, and review the situation after that period of time.

However, on Cllr Morrow’s request, a recorded vote saw six Sinn Fein representatives, two SDLP and one Independent Republican councillor, supporting the proposal, and only one councillor, Lord Morrow, voting against it.

DUP councillors Kim Ashton and Frances Burton abstained from the vote, as did Cllrs Walter Cuddy, Jim Hamilton, Robert Mulligan and Kenneth Reid (all UUP) and Cllr Pat Daly of the SDLP.

The proposal was carried, however, Cllr Morrow advised that he could not support it due to “lack of information” and that “Council need to look at this position”.
