AN IRANIAN filmmaker will screen her latest work which looks at the fusion of cultures in Northern Ireland, at Dungannon’s Ranfurly Arts and Visitor Centre, on Friday March 22.

Zhenia Mahdi-Nau, who also works as an artist and photographer, and is based in Belfast, will also answer questions from the audience following her film Tapestry of Colours.

The feature length documentary explores the perception of identity in Northern Ireland as it becomes progressively diverse, and so far the response to the film has been overwhelmingly positive.

Born in Iran but living in Northern Ireland for over 20 years, Zhenia Mahdi-Nau has drawn on all of her creative and artistic skills to direct and produce an important, memorable and ground breaking piece of work.

Tapestry of Colours features personal and moving accounts of individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures set against colourful and unusual festivals with a strong emphasis on music.

Zhenia was influenced by memories of her own childhood when she and her family first left Iran to live in London, and the film undoubtedly resonates with some of her own challenges back then.

Thrown into the school world, necessity became the reason for total integration into the English culture which she fully embraced.

As she went through her teenage years with little exposure to her original culture, Zhenia felt very little affinity with it as an adult.

Asked why she brought the screening to Dungannon, Zhenia explained, “I think this film has international appeal. I really put my heart and soul into the making of this documentary so naturally I want as many people as possible to see it.

“Therefore I was delighted when the Dungannon Council invited me to screen it here. Since making the movie we have seen new unrest in parts of Northern Ireland so it has an added relevancy right now.”

Anyone wishing to attend can call Ranfurly House Arts and Visitor Centre on 028 8772 8600 for tickets which are £3.
