Learner crashes boyfriend’s car into supermarket

A LEARNER driver crashed her boyfriend’s car causing over £2,000 damage to a supermarket, Magherafelt Magistrates Court was told.

Megan Lockhead (24), of Coronation Park, Dundonald was given a Conditional Discharge for 12 months for careless driving, having no insurance and driving while unaccompanied.

Her boyfriend Gareth McDowell (23), of Toome Road, Ballymena, was banned for three months for permitting no insurance and driving unaccompanied.

The court heard the incident took place in the car park of the Lidl supermarket at Castledawson Road, Magherafelt, on September 2 last year.

A defence solicitor explained McDowell had allowed his girlfriend to drive in the car park and, as well as the damage to the building, the car had been a write-off.

Imposing the penalties, District Judge Des Perry noted that McDowell had previous motoring convictions and advised Lockhead to get professional driving lessons.
