Man acquitted of Michaela murder sues Mauritian authorities

A MAURITIAN man acquitted of the murder of Michaela McAreavey has joined his co-accused in suing Mauritian authorities.

Sandip Moneea, has taken legal action asking for compensation of 80m Mauritian rupees, over £1.5million.

Moneea claims for compensation are based on the argument that his arrest and 18 month imprisonment was both “illegal and arbitrary”.

Michaela, was murdered in the Legends hotel on the island in January 2011.

Earlier this year Moneea and Avinash Treebhoowoon were cleared by a Mauritian court of having committed the murder.

Treebhoowoon, 32, launched his own legal action against the Mauritian authorities earlier this month claiming that his arrest and detention wasa arbitrary, illegal and that he was relentlessly tortured.

At the time a lawyer for Treebhoowoon, Sanjeev Teeluckdharry said: “This claim has been lodged because of all the prejudice, detention, torture and humiliation my client suffered.”

After his arrest Treebhoowoon’s wife suffered a miscarriage, his lawyer said.

Mr Teeluckdharry said: “His parents have also suffered humiliation. He was already branded a murderer and has not been re-integrated into employment. He is still jobless.”
