Older people benefit from ‘Rapid Access’ Clinics in Dungannon

THE Southern Trust provides a Consultant led ‘Rapid Access’ Clinic for people over 65 years in Dungannon Armagh and Lurgan.

To date, 1450 people within the Southern Trust with conditions including mobility problems, chest infections and falls have been assessed at one of these clinics, this has prevented 75% of these people being seen at the Emergency Department or being admitted to hospital.

Following a GP referral, the person will be seen within one to three working days and if necessary will have investigations such as X-rays and blood tests with the results available on the same day.

Angela McVeigh Director of Older People and Primary Care said: “The Rapid Access Clinic at South Tyrone Hospital provides a local, responsive and expert service which supports GPs and older people when there is a concern about a medical condition. The Clinic provides a thorough assessment by a range of clinical staff, and over the course of a few hours in a calm and friendly environment can provide a comprehensive plan of treatment and care.

“This often makes the difference between the GP or older person being confident enough to manage their treatment at home, or seeking hospital treatment often in an emergency situation. The Rapid Access Clinic is delivering the changes set out in ‘Transforming Your Care’ and I would encourage local GPs to use it as much as possible.”

Mrs Sheila Elstner from, Dungannon was recently referred to the Rapid Access Clinic by her GP Dr McLouglin with symptoms of weakness, dizziness, headache and weight loss. Sheila received a complete assessment by the team and was diagnosed with heart block and arrangements were made immediately for her to be fitted at Craigavon Hospital with a pacemaker.

Speaking about the service Mrs Elstner said: “I was treated with great dignity and respect and I had all the tests done very quickly. I also found the clinic convenient to get to and my family were able to park at the entrance to the Day Hospital and I didn’t have to walk too far. I had a pacemaker fitted at Craigavon Hospital within a few days of being seen at the Rapid Access Clinic.

Dr Una McLoughlin from Ardmore Medical Practice in Dungannon said: “The Rapid Access Clinic at South Tyrone Hospital is of great benefit for our patients over 65 years of age with illnesses, who would otherwise need admission directly to Craigavon Area Hospital for acute care. The holistic assessment of the patient by a Consultant led multidisciplinary team often results in management at home with planned treatment or follow-up medical appointment at the Day Hospital which enhances the quality of care we offer to our patients.”
