Orange Lodge distances itself from Jubilee row

A LOCAL Orange Order Lodge has moved to distance itself from comments made by Alex Elliott of the TUV regarding the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.

In a statement to the Tyrone Times and a number of other media outlets, Mr Elliott, who was a candidate for the Fermanagh-South Tyrone constituency race, criticised Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council’s handling of the celebrations to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Elliott, whose cousin is the former Ulster Unionist leader, Tom Elliott, current Fermanagh-South Tyrone MLA, said he was “saddened” to hear that the council had “failed to organise one single event to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Jubilee”.

He went on to claim: “This Nationalist/Republican controlled council seems to be following in the same discriminatory tactics adopted by those who rule departments in Stormont.

“I am reliably informed that the Community Relations department did donate £500 to Killyman District to support a District Orange project and further increased the amount to £1,000 after complaint by the District Lodge.

“But I am disgusted that the Council had then the cheek to send Killyman District a bill of £500 for the use of Dungannon Park for the evenings events. “Robbing Peter to pay Paul”.”

Alex Elliott’s claims have been dismissed by Killyman District LOL, who said they had “no issues” with Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council.

A spokesman for the Killyman District told the Times: “Mr Elliott is neither a member of nor speaks on behalf of Killyman District LOL.

“The Institution ran a hugely successful day at Dungannon Park - attended by all sections of the community - with support from the local council.

“We have no issues with Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council and look forward to working with them and developing our positive relationship in the days ahead.”

The Tyrone Times attempted to contact Dungannon Council to clarify the situation, however, no one was available for comment.
