ULSTER Unionist Party Assembly Member for Mid-Ulster, Sandra Overend has praised the fast action of the bus driver as well as the emergency services in Moneymore this morning as they managed to quell a fire that broke out on a bus as it travelled through the village.

“First and foremost it is important to say that no children were on the bus at the time, and no people were injured in the fire, which happened right outside my constituency office in Moneymore.

“Also, thankfully no other road users or businesses were injured or damaged. Reports suggest that a technical problem started a fire at the rear of the bus. The alert driver then pulled the bus over to the side of the road. Due to the close proximity of the engine, which caught fire, to the upholstery on the vehicle, the flames spread quite quickly.

“Despite the ominous scene, PSNI Officers and members of the Fire Service arrived on the scene swiftly and secured the area, before extinguishing the fire and re-opening the road to traffic. It is through their quick action that the accident was swiftly dealt with the public were allowed to resume normal practice. I would like to praise the actions of the driver and the emergency services who took a potentially life threatening incident and made it safe for the public.”

The village’s main street was closed to traffic for a time but reopened again around 10am.
