Plaque unveiling at Benburb and History evening

Benburb Famine Soup Kitchen Plaque

Benburb Famine Soup Kitchen Plaque

AS part of the Benburb Festival and Heritage Day, the O’Neill Country Historical Society held a very successful guided tour of the historical buildings of Benburb.

Upwards of 100 people from a wide area participated. The tour finished with the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the famine soup kitchen established by Lord Powerscourt on what is now the site of the “Bottle of Benburb” licensed premises.

The plaque, which now forms part of the Eglish Heritage Trail, was unveiled by the mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council Phelim Gildernew. The granite plaque was generously donated by Holmes Monumental Sculptures of Dungannon. The evening finished off with a very enjoyable session of music and song.
