Police issue reminder about staying safe online

INTERNET and social network users have been reminded to put their personal safety first when connecting with others online.

This year’s Safer Internet Day takes place on Tuesday, February 5, and the PSNI’s Coalisland and Moy Neighbourhood Team have advised parents, teachers and young people to visit a special website set up to offer useful tips and resources on internet safety.

Police Constable, Stephen Rutledge, said: “The internet has become such an important part of everyday life that it can be easy to forget your personal security when you use social networking sites like Facebook, and Twitter.

“Safer Internet Day is on 5th February 2013 and this year’s theme is “Connect with Respect”

“Starting as an initiative of the EU in 2004, Safer Internet Day has grown beyond its traditional geographic zones and is now celebrated in more than 90 countries worldwide and across six of the world’s seven continents.

“Saferinternetday.org provides a global online community platform where countries and international organisations can showcase events and actions conducted locally, nationally and internationally for Safer Internet Day

“I would encourage parents, teachers and even young people to visit the Safer Internet Day website as it has lots of useful tips and resources.

“We have a link from our Facebook and Twitter page to the website. Anyone who is concerned to see how to manage their online presence should definitely check out this online resource.”
