Republican history musuem to celebrate three year anniversary

THE Tyrone Republican History Museum is set to celebrate its three year anniversary this Easter, with a week long exhibition focusing on the 1916 rising.

The museum, located in Coalisland square, beside Herons shop, was opened in 2010 by the Clonoe and Coalisland Republican Ex-Prisoner Society. It houses a vast collection of artifacts and prison handcrafts, representing various phases of the struggle for Irish freedom.

Since opening the museum has hosted visitors from around the country and the world. Many have been impressed by the informative staff, unique exhibitions and collection of local photographs and artifacts.

Urging the public to attend, head curator, and ex-prisoner, Hugh Quinn had this to say;

“We have been very grateful for the donations and support from the community for the past three years.

Bringing this museum to Coalisland was a long term goal of local republicans. Its purpose from opening has been to preserve and promote the history of the Republican struggle for Irish freedom, and to educate our youth so that they may understand why republicans fought, died and spent many years in prison for their beliefs.

Over the week of Easter we will be exhibiting a vast range of photographs and artifacts from the period of the 1916 rising. Many pieces have been donated and are not available anywhere else.

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the ex prisoner society to thank everyone for their help and continued support and urge the public to come down to the museum to view this very unique exhibition”.

The exhibition will run from April the 1st to the 7th. Admission is free.
