St Pat’s chooses ‘achieving excellence together’ as motto

FOLLOWING a community-wide competition to search for the new St Patrick’s Bilateral College’s motto, to mark the school’s 50th year, Year 9 student, Daniel McNicholl from Dungiven, has had his motto selected as the winning entry.

‘Achieving Excellence Together’ will now become engrained in the St Patrick’s College’s vocabulary and will be the motto used throughout the school’s branding and marketing materials, such as its website and prospectus, in the years ahead.

The competition was launched back in October by UTV presenter, Frank Mitchell and local Parish Priest, Father Baker and since then, hundreds of suggestions have been received.

Both Frank Mitchell and Father Baker were on hand to help School Principal, Mrs Anne Scott, judge the competition, with Daniel’s suggestion being selected as the number one motto.

Principal, Mrs Anne Scott explains: “For many years, our school motto has been ‘Every Child Matters’. This motto has served us well however in our 50th year, we wanted to create an initiative that would involve the entire community and reflect what St Patrick’s stands for today.

“Daniel’s motto, ‘Achieving Excellence Together’ really sums up all that St Patrick’s is about. Together, pupils and staff have already achieved so much within academia and sports, and our vision is to continue to ‘Achieve Excellence Together.’”

Having his motto chosen as the winner, Daniel was presented with an iPad 2 by Mrs Scott and Father Baker, in addition to the prestige of helping to shape how others view his school moving forward.

St Patrick’s College’s Open Night is being held on Wednesday, January 16 from 7pm and the first-ever St Patrick’s College Open Day will take place on Saturday January 19 from 10am.

Mrs Scott would like to invite all parents of prospective pupils to visit the school and to see how the school ‘achieves excellence together’ with its pupils.

St Patrick’s College is a bilateral school, situated in Maghera, County Derry, with just under 1300 pupils.

The school was awarded specialist status for Science in 2007, holds an Investors in People Award, Laureate status for computer technology use and the top EFQM NI Quality Excellence Award 2011.
