The history of Irish giants
THE next meeting of Donaghmore Historical Society will take place in The Heritage Centre on Monday, 11th March, at 8 p.m., when Mr. Brendan Holland of Killeeshil and Clonaneese Historical Society will speak on the topic: “The History of Irish Giants and Gigantism.”
It is said that in both myth and folklore there is more than a grain of truth, and nowhere is this more true than in the story of Irish giants and the medical condition that is often, but not always, associated with it.
As both a local historian and a six feet nine inch “giant,” Brendan Holland has an obvious and intense interest in the subject. The combination of folklore, history and modern medical science can offer the explanation of the concept “standing out from the crowd.”Brendan is a founder member of Killeeshil and Clonaneese Historical Society and has thoroughly researched this subject, which has only recently revealed many of its hitherto unknown secrets.
Among his other interests, he has had a life-long association with the G.A.A. and theatre-goers will recall his performance some years ago in a Bardic role to which men of average height could only aspire. So, come along on Monday night at 8 o’clock to hear a man so uniquely qualified to speak on what is a most fascinating subject.
