Times gets clean bill of health at weekly Reporter Clinic!
READERS of the Tyrone Times had a unique opportunity to air their views about their favourite weekly newspaper this week - with praise flowing freely for the publication’s “superior” news, sport and entertainment coverage in particular.
Members of the public were able to meet with Times journalist, Annamay McNally, at the paper’s Reporter Clinic, which took place at Sainsbury’s Cafe in the town’s Oaks Shopping Centre.
Management and staff of Sainsbury’s kindly provided a comfortable venue for readers to share their opinions about the newspaper, while enjoying free tea and coffee, kindly supplied by the supermarket cafe.
Local mums, Claire and Orla, said the Times’ news coverage was “far superior” to its local rivals.
Orla, who works as a veterinary surgeon, said she enjoyed reading agricultural news items and suggested the paper might include more of these.
Derrytresk man, Francie Hagan, meanwhile, was full of praise for the Times’ sport coverage, particularly Gaelic games.
A huge football fan himself, Francie said: “I buy the paper mainly for the football, but I also enjoy the local news. I could do without buying other papers, but I really like to get the Tyrone Times as it’s the first paper of the week.”
Ann O’Neill also enjoys catching up on local news first thing on a Monday with the Times and, like Francie, particularly likes the sports section.
“I’m glad the Times comes out on a Monday, and I really like the print of the paper. All my boys are involved with Naomh Colum Cille Hurling Club, and the paper did a great spread on them when they got to the All Ireland.
“If I was to make any suggestions for improvement, it would be to see more competitions and more items for children.
“I enjoy the Mum’s the Word section as it’s nice to read about other people going through the same problems with parenting and so on as yourself.
“Another part of the paper I really enjoy is the history of local places, particularly the Hill of the O’Neill in Dungannon.”
Country music fan, Thomas O’Neill, likes reading about local dances and events in the entertainment section, as well as keeping track of all the local sport.
He suggested the paper might benefit from extra coverage on the country music scene locally, with focus on musicians such as Nathan Carter, Robert Mizelle and Derek Ryan.
