Town men accused of having explosives

TWO Dungannon men have appeared in court accused of terrorism offences relating to the discovery of seven pipe bombs in a car in the village of Newmills.

Forty year-old Thomas Hamill, and Mark McGilloway, also 40, both from the Springdale Estate, are charged with possessing seven improvised explosive devices and having explosive substances with intent to endanger life.

The charges relate to an incident at Mineveigh Road on Monday night last.

Both men, who appeared before Magistrates in Strabane on Thursday, refused to recognise the court. They were remanded in custody.

There was a heavy security presence in and around Strabane Courthouse as the two men were brought in under armed police escort.

Members of their families applauded and shouted support.

A detective constable told the court that he was aware of the background to the case and believed he could connect the defendants to the offences.

A defence lawyer said she had no questions and would not be making a bail application at that stage.
