Two year old’s death due to poisoning
TWO YEAR OLD Dungannon boy Darius Selickis died after consuming a chemical substance an inquest has been told.
It is believed that Latvian born Darius died after consuming sodium nitrite at his father’s workplace, a meat processing plant.
Darius who passed away in July 2011 had accompanied his mother to his father’s workplace where the child proceeded to remove the chemical from a plastic box at the factory. The name of the factory was not revealed during the hearing.
Coroner John Leckey, sitting at Armagh Courthouse last week said that a pathologist’s report had found that the two year old died of poisoning by sodium nitrite.
The Coroner said: “Sodium nitrite is a dangerous substance and a well recognised cause of sudden death.
“In the place where Mr Selickis worked, sodium nitrite was kept in a plastic container.
“The tragedy is Mrs Selickis’s wife, who was not an employee had brought Darius together with his older brother and sister with her while helping her husband at work.”
Shortly after taking the substance Darius vomited and became limp. He was taken by ambulance to Craigavon Area Hospital but died that afternoon.
The child’s death was investigated by both the police and the Health and Safety Executive.
Sodium Nitrite is used in the food industry as both a preservative used in fish and meat and as a colour additive.
The chemical, deadly in large amounts is generally used to prevent the growth of bacteria.
