A teenage girl was forced to the ground and kicked around the head in a racist attack in Coalisland, it has been reported

The 14-year-old was with friends at a takeaway in the Main Street area when the attack happened at about 10.30pm on April 30.

Speaking to the Tyrone Courier, the girl’s mother she believed the assault happened because her daughter is black.

“It happened after the fun fair which had been in Coalisland,” she said.

“The woman, who we think is in her twenties, got out of her car and said, ‘I’m the owner of this country’ and ‘I’m the boss in Coalisland’.

“My daughter was then hit to the ground and they kicked her around the head too.

“She was with four friends at the time, but they were so scared that they were helpless.”

The woman, who was born in Africa and whose daughter was born in Portugal, added: “I think this happened because my daughter is black.”

A PSNI spokesman said police had received a report of an assault and confirmed it is being treated as a racist hate crime.
