CAFRE recently hosted a one day curriculum support event at Greenmount Campus on biodiversity for over 30 A-level Biology students and teachers from Royal School Dungannon.
With indoor and outdoor activities, this event allowed pupils to see the fantastic facilities at Greenmount including the Dairy Centre, Wetlands area and the Horticulture Centre and to find out about the diverse range of career opportunities open to them at CAFRE.
Biodiversity subjects covered on the day included hedgerow conservation and maintenance, biological control, eutrophication, organic pollution from slurry and effluent and consequences on biodiversity.
Feedback from pupils and staff following the event was extremely positive.
Alison Chestnutt Head of Careers at Royal School Dungannon who accompanied the pupils on their visit commented that it was: “an excellent opportunity to see real-life examples and receive expert advice on topics our pupils are currently studying and to consider the impact on biodiversity and the agri-food industry which is key to Northern Ireland’s economy.”
