Local school children could be given a hands-on insight into life in the trenches of World War I if an ambitious project planned for Nunnery Hill in Dungannon secures the funding it needs to go ahead.
Councillors at a committee meeting were recently told about the proposal, which is the brainchild of the Tyrone Somme Memorial Association.
Phase one of the project, at Dungannon Park, involves building a replica of a First World War trench system, with plans to invite schools to learn about the building andfighting in the trenches. The committee meeting heard that the second phase of the proiect involves plans to build an educationcentre to go along with the trench system to further educate children andthe public on World War One.
The Tyrone Somme Memorial Association, which has approached the Heritage Lottery Fund and other groups in relation to securi ng finance for their plans, asked Dungannon Council whether it would consider leasing Nunnery Hill for the project.
It was agreed that the matter would be brought to a further committee meeting to consider how the request could be proceeded with.
