Speed limits of 20mph could be introduced across the majority of roads in Dungannon town and neighbouring villages under an ambitious proposal being considered by Dungannon District
Council.

Major roads would keep their existing speed limits except near schools at busy times, according to the plan which has been agreed in principle by the council
chamber.

SDLP Councillor Anthony McGonnell said that although the new scheme would cost money to implement, this should be balanced with the fact that lives will be saved.

“There is a huge difference in the effects of an impact sustained at 20mph compared to that at even slightly higher speeds, and consequently I am welcoming this new bill, which will limit speeds on residential roads.

“There are a lot of grey areas in local towns and villages where the speed limit changes between 30mph and 40mph, and this new plan will clarify that. Within housing estates, the speed limit is already 20mph but this is not clear to motorists.”
