TRIBUTES have been flooding in for a former school nurse who passed away suddenly.
Margaret Mooney, described as a “popular, kind-hearted woman”, died on Thursday.
The 56 year-old, who was from the Ardboe area, had worked at St Mary’s Grammar School in Magherafelt, and was highly thought of by both pupils and staff.
Her funeral service was held on Monday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Moortown.
Parish priest Father Sean McCartan described her as a “highly regarded, intuitive lady” who “never gave up on anyone”.
“She had a great regard for people’s emotional state, and people were drawn to her because of that,” Father McCartan told the Mail.
“She never gave up on anybody, there was always a reason for people behaving in a certain way and she went to great lengths to help them. She always helped people realise their dreams.”
The grandmother of two worked at St Mary’s Grammar for many years, only leaving last summer on retirement.
“She was a loving, genuine woman and will be a big, big loss to our school family,” said Principal of the school, Mrs Gillespie.
“She went above and beyond her call of duty, nothing was ever a bother and she always tried to make you feel better somehow.”
Mrs Gillespie said the school formed a big part of nurse Mooney’s life, with children Carla, Mary, Anthony and Lisa all past pupils. Husband Seamus also helped out at the school during productions.
“She was always so happy and all the pupils loved her,” added the principal.
“That goes for the staff too. If any members of staff were feeling ill or had any injury she would have been more than happy to help them out also.
“With our school being such a sports orientated school Nurse Mooney would have given pupils and staff sports massage, she also practiced in reflexology and aromatherapy.”
Following news of her death, both current and past pupils of the Castledawson Road school flooded social networking sites with tributes.
One wrote: “I’m so sad to hear about nurse Mooney, she was missed at the start of this school year and will be missed even more now, rest in peace”
Another said: “Nurse Mooney was an amazing woman, will be missed by everyone she took care of throughout her time”.
