TWO masked men armed with a machete have mounted a midday raid on a cash in transit van outside a bank in Aughnacloy.
The incident occurred on Moore Street on Friday, which was sealed off for several hours as police launched an investigation.
Police have described one of the perpetrators as male, 5’ 10” tall, of solid build, wearing a full face balaclava.
The pair are understood to have made off towards Monaghan. Police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed anything or who saw a dark coloured saloon car and a light coloured car in the area at the time.
UUP Coumcillor Jim Hamilton said the incident will heighten fears among retailers in the town and increase calls to have the local police station reopened.
“It is only fortunate that this happened in a quiet part of the town, when there would have been no school children about. Obviously this is a distressing incident and highlights the concerns that many people have had since the part-time police station closed for repairs about a year ago.
“Given our proximity to the border, many retailers feel very vulnerable.”
