Dungannon has won the title of Best Kept Medium Town in the 2011 SuperValu Best Kept Town Awards.

Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council are to meet with representatives from the DRD to discuss the ongoing issues with parking in Dungannon town centre.

Chair of the Council’s Strategic Development Committee Councillor Kim Ashton told the TIMES she is pleased that DRD have agreed to meet on the issue.

She said: “Car parking is an ongoing issue within Dungannon town centre. I had requested that the Council invite senior officials from DRD to discuss this issue and I am pleased to report that DRD have agreed to do so.

“This meeting will provide an opportunity for the Council to discuss the current car parking rates and discuss proposals of running promotional days such as those that ran at Christmas, e.g 5hrs car parking for a £1 and discuss opportunities to have a free day parking in the town.

“This type of incentive can only help our town traders in these difficult trading times.”

Councillor Ashton added that with the ongoing work in the town at present, parking has become more difficult particularly for disabled users.

She said: “As the public realm scheme is now well under way it has become increasingly difficult for blue badge holders to get parked near the shops. I will be asking DRD to request the traffic wardens in the town show some flexibility and consideration to be given during these construction works.”

Concluding, Cllr. Ashton said: “It is important that Dungannon Council do all they can to help our town businesses and take a lead on dealing with the car parking issue.”
