Dungannon residents and shoppers are set to enjoy a huge boost with the news that all public ‘Pay and Display’ car parks in the town centre will be free 24/7 during the full months of September and October.

Yes – you read correctly folks – car parking is absolutely free in Dungannon’s ‘Pay and Display’ car parks during September and October.

This initiative has been rolled out following a proposal from Dungannon Traders Association to Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council and subsequent agreement reached with DRD Roads Service who own the car parks.

The Council is making the move to entice and encourage more shoppers back into the town centre as work continues with the public realm scheme in Market Square.

These free parking measures will come into effect for a trial period from Monday 1st September and continue through until Friday 31st October inclusive.

The following car parks are included in this initiative: - Ann Street East (73 spaces), Castle Hill (100 spaces), Perry Street East (92 spaces) and Scotch Street North (258 spaces).

All these car parks are positioned around the town centre and are within a short walking distance of Dungannon’s main shopping streets.

In addition of course there are the 330 Free on Street Town Centre Car Parking spaces providing shoppers with the normal maximum stay parking facility of 60 minutes.

The Mayor, Councillor Roger Burton said: “Free parking during September and October will make it even easier for people to come into Dungannon town centre and enjoy the great choice of superb shops and stores, friendly customer service and of course those all-important value for money purchases.

With the Public Realm works ongoing at the top of Market Square it is important the general public are given every opportunity to support local traders.”

Retailers across Dungannon town centre are welcoming the free parking offer. Stephen Mohan, Chairperson of Dungannon Traders Association added “The plans are positive news and demonstrate that the Council and retailers can work together to make a real difference to shoppers in the town centre. Now shoppers can spend longer in the town centre during September and October and have no worries about expiring car parking tickets. It’s a great opportunity for shoppers to visit and support the many shops in Dungannon town centre and who knows you may even get in some early Christmas presents and avoid that last minute rush!”
