Hackett trial
to conclude this week

The trial of an Augher teenager accused of murdering his father is expected to conclude this week at Dungannon Crown Court.

Sean Hackett, 19, is accused of murdering his father Aloysius Hackett, 60, at the family home at Aghindarragh Road, near Augher.

Last week the court heard how Hackett, a talented gaelic footballer who had represented his county at minor level, had shot his father twice on January 4th, 2013.

During evidence to the court last week, Mr Hackett’s mother Eilish, told the court that her son had, in the months running up to the incident, also attempted to strangle her at the family home.

Mrs Hackett told the court that Sean had been a “son to be proud of”, but that he had become quiet and withdrawn in the months prior to the
shooting.

The prosecution had earlier explained how Hackett had rehearsed the killing of his father and how he had practised using the .22 bolt-action rifle in fields in the days before the shooting.

The trial, which has been heard before a packed Court, is scheduled for two weeks.
