The story of little Charlie Craig touched the hearts of so many, and one Cookstown lady was so touched by Charlie’s plight she is running the Belfast City Marathon in his honour.

Laura Currie, will undertake the 26.2 mile course to raise money for the Delete Blood Cancer, the charity involved with registering the public on the bone marrow donation list.

The 29-year-old accountant told the MAIL she instantly wanted to help in anyway she could when she heard about Charlie’s urgent need for bone marrow.

Laura said: “It was always my intention to run the marathon for a children’s charity because if anything is to keep me motivated and focused, it’s children. I heard Charlie’s story and it just hit me. I really wanted to help this beautiful little boy and the marathon gave me the platform to do so. Within seconds of reading his story I had decided that I would run in aid of Charlie Craig.”

With one marathon under her belt which Laura ran while she lived in Sydney for a year, she said her training is currently going according to plan.

“I’m up to 18 mile at the minute and plan to do 21 on Friday then I will be tapering from then until race day.”

Laura is also in the process of organising a number of fundraising activities for the charity including a Table Quiz in Killymoon Golf Club, Family Fortunes night in Mulligan’s Bar and possibly a Sky Dive.

She said: “I have been overwhelmed by the support from everyone since I set up my JustGiving page, over 100 people have donated already in such a short space of time. The support near and far has been amazing, donations coming as far as Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, New York, Australia to mention a few so Charlie’s story is touching the hearts of everyone. I have just set up a text service were people can text and give £4. Every time someone is registered on the bone marrow register it costs £40. So I hope this service will take off.” You can sponsor Laura and donate via her JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/Laura-Currie1 or you can text CCRA99 to 70070.

Charlie’s mum Cliodna and dad Fintan have spoken of their huge pride for Laura and her dedication to run the marathon for little Charlie.

Hundreds of people turned out in support of Charlie at special bone marrow registration days held in Cookstown and Belfast last month.

Charlie’s parents told the MAIL: “We are hugely proud that Laura has decided to run the Belfast Marathon on behalf of the Charlie Craig Campaign, raising vital funds for Delete Blood Cancer. The training needed to be able to run 26.2 miles is more than most people would ever imagine, so there is a huge amount of dedication shown from Laura already, but her fundraising efforts have also been tremendous. It is with support like this that Delete Blood Cancer can carry out their work in registering potential bone marrow donors to find a match for Charlie and others just like him. We are sure Laura will do Charlie proud and wish her every luck!”
