The Newmills and District VC Group have organised ten events throughout the week from Monday 4th August to Sunday 10th August.

The events range from church services to face painting and football.

Torrential rain fell as Millar Farr stepped forward to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph in Newmills at the Church parade in the village last Sunday at the start of a week long of activities marking the 100th anniversary of World War 1.

UUP MLA Tom Elliott said: “I attended the opening ceremony on Monday which was the first of its kind in Northern Ireland and was opened by Lord Lieutenant of Tyrone. All in attendance were very pleased with the ceremony and hope that people had the opportunity to visit the hall throughout the week.

“These events are not only set up to recognise the huge sacrifice made by thousands of soldiers during the Great War. On Tuesday 5th August there will be a plaque unveiled in Carland Presbyterian Church commemorating Pte Morrow and a memorial stone will be issued by Her Majesty’s Government to Newmills in recognition of the VC awarded to Pte Morrow in due course.

“I believe this is a great success and along with the councillors I pay tribute to the members of Newmills and District VC Group for their organisation of the week.”
