Just two weeks after their first Tyrone senior title since 2006, Errgial Ciaran are back in championship action this weekend when they take on Cavan champions Mullahoran, writes Seamus Donnelly.
Errigal, Tyrone’s most successful side in the provincial series with two titles to their name, will be seeking to repeat their heroics of 2002 when Mickey Harte was at the helm of a side that included the likes of Eoin Gormley and the Canavan brothers, Peter and Pascal.
The record of Tyrone’s top sides in the competition leave something to be desired of course, but with a former Ulster and All Ireland club winner managing the Errigal side this time around there may be cause for cautious optimism in the Dunmoyle camp.
Errigal were deserving winners of the Tyrone title on Sunday last when they overcame reigning champions Dromore in a hard fought encounter in Healy Park.
Errigal will enter the game with a number of players who have big match experience including John Devine, Peter Harte, Aidan McCrory, David Harte and the McGinley brothers, Enda and Cormac.
Experienced campaigners like David Harte, the McGinleys and John Devine will add a great deal of know-how to what is in essence a young Errigal side.
The Dunmoyle-based side will be hoping that they can exert the same dominance over the middle third of the field against Mullahoran as they did against Dromore.
Their trip to Kingspan Breffni Park on Sunday will see them meet a Mullahoran Dreadnoughts team who overcame red hot favourites Kingscourt in the Cavan final.
Among the more high profile names in the Mullahoran team is multiple time world champion handballer and Cavan senior star Paul Brady who has been in action in the World Handball Championships in Citywest, Dublin recently.
There won’t be much between the teams but with two weeks to recover from their county final exertions and player of the class and quality of Peter Harte and Enda McGinley available to them Errigal can advance to the quarter final stage.
