Thrills and spills
The Tyrone Senior and Intermediate Championships continue this week with eight matches down for decision - and the tie of the round is undoubtedly the meeting of last year’s finalists, Clonoe against Omagh, in Dunmoyle on Sunday.
Also in action are county champions Dromore as they round off the weekend against Mickey Donnelly’s Eglish.
Friday - Omagh, 7pm
Clann na Gael v Gortin
Both teams have struggled at times this season with league results at times very ordinary. Over the last number of years Gortin have performed well in championship football and will be favourites to advance to the next round.
Times Tip: Gortin
Friday - Omagh, 8.30pm
Loughmacrory v Pomeroy
This clash in Healy Park pits two teams against each other who will be looking to make a big splash in the 2012 Championship. Pomeroy’s league form has been considerably better than Loughmacrory’s and with Mark McKenna and Hugh Pat McGeary on board they will take all the beating.
Times Tip: Pomeroy
Saturday - Coalisland, 5.30pm
Derrylaughan v Edendork
Derrylaughan’s championship record over the last couple of years has been excellent winning the 2010 intermediate championship and reaching the senior semi-final last year. They meet an improving Edendork side who will be keen to mark their return to Senior football with an appearance in the last eight. If Derrylaughan can contain Darren McCurry and Niall Morgan they may just shade the decision, however that may be easier said than done.
Times Tip: Derrylaughan
Saturday - Coalisland, 7pm
Errigal Ciaran v Moortown
Errigal Ciaran’s championship record over recent years has been fairly poor by the clubs own high standards but they will be confident about dispatching Moortown on Saturday. The lowly St Malachys haven’t had much to cheer about this year with just a solitary league win to their name. Errigal manager Ronan McGuckin told this paper early in the year that he aimed to have his team peaking in August for the championship and recent league results would appear to suggest he has his team moving in the right direction.
Times Tip: Errigal Ciaran
Sunday - Dunmoyle, 2pm
Cookstown v Augher
Runaway Division Two leaders Cookstown will be hoping to repeat their heroics of 2009 when they went all the way to All-Ireland glory but they won’t get it all their own way against Augher. Cookstown have one of the most dangerous forward lines in the the intermediate grade with Conor Mullan, Owen Mulligan and James McGahan all match winners on their day. Augher, however, will pose a live threat to the Fr Rocks, especially if Jamie Donnelly and Aidan Cassidy can produce the kind of performances they are capable of producing.
Times Tip: Cookstown
Sunday - Dunmoyle, 3.30pm
Clonoe v Omagh
This mouthwatering clash at Dunmoyle is undoubtedly the tie of the first round pitting last year’s county finalists Clonoe against a very strong Omagh side. The St Endas may well be the most unpredictable side in the county on their day scintillating but often performing below what they are capable of. Backboned by county players Conor Clarke, Joe and Justin McMahon they have the right tools to trouble the O’Rahillys. Clonoe have been missing a number of key players this season as a result of injury but in Conor McAliskey they have one of the form players in Tyrone.
Times Tip: Clonoe
Sunday - Carrickmore, 6pm
Urney v Killeeshil
This tie provides Killeeshil with their last opportunity to prolong their stay in the Intermediate ranks after a season to forget for the St Marys. Urney, in comparison, will have genuine hopes of winning the Paddy Cullen Cup having come so close to it in the 2010 decider when they were just pipped by Derrylaughan. Such has been Killeeshil’s form this season few could predict anything other than a Urney victory.
Times Tip: Urney
Sunday - Carrickmore, 7.30pm
Eglish v Dromore
Eglish couldn’t have asked for a tougher first round draw as they square of against last year’s county champions Dromore. The St Dympnas have had an excellent championship record in recent seasons and will be hopeful of securing back to back titles. With fresh faces such as Niall Sludden continuing to impress and veterans like Colm McCullagh and Ryan McMenamin still influential there’s no question that Dromore certainly have the talent. Eglish have the potential to cause Dromore problems especially full forward duo of Pete McCann and Greg Jordan but Dromore should have too much strength.
Times Tip: Dromore
