Meanwhile, at Kildress Parochial Hall, last Friday night, An Mhaigh had its strongest representation at a Scór event for a very long time. Each of our young members who participated on the night did the club proud. The Sky Blue colours of the Tír na nÓg club were worn proudly in five of the eight first round competitions. Representing An Mhaigh with distinction were: Brianna Mallon - Amhránaíocht Aonaoir (Solo Singing); Ryan Casey - Aithriseoireacht (Recitation); Ellen O’Neill, Lavina O’Neill, Caoimhe Magee, Aisling O’Neill, Louise Keppler and Siobhan Keppler – An Rince Foirne (Céilí Dancing); Ellen Donohue, Anna McDonald, Brianna Mallon and Kathryn Regan - Bailéad Ghrúpa (Ballad Group); Liam Lynch, Oisin McKeown and Ryan Casey - Tráth na gCeisteanna (Question Time). Finally, An Mhaigh’s strong showing in this year’s Scór na nÓg would not have been possible without the leadership and drive shown by our Cultural Officer Caoimhe Lynch and her parents Liam and Angela, who have helped revive significant interest in Scór among our club members. Cathal is seeking nominations for our youth management teams. Anyone interested in managing, coaching or helping out with any teams, please contact him ASAP thanks. Given the success he has driven in the past six years and the excellent calibre of personnel he has involved in club coaching, it’s a project well worth getting involved with.
Among a host of trophies on display will be the latest additions, the Rotary Club Cup and Shield. The 2012 Under 12 Rotary Cup/Shield was held on Sunday 4th November with Cuchulainns of Armagh, Ballinascreen of Derry, St. Galls and defending all travelling with two teams each to take on Eoghan Ruadh who also had two teams represented. Defending Champions Cushendalll and Mullinahone of Tipperary were unable to travel. Once again the weather forecasters got things wrong, what was supposed to be a cold yet dry and bright day turned out to be cold, overcast and wet. That didn’t deter the young hurlers and after a frantic mornings hurling, it was Eoghan Ruadh who contested the shield and cup semi finals against Ballinascreen. After being pummeled by their under 13 team two Sundays ago, this time it was Eoghan Ruadh who advanced in both games. In the Shield final they met Cuchullains while in the Cup final they played St Galls.
The shield final began well for the young Eoghan Ruadh players, with Phillip McGrath and S.P McKernan bossing midfield, and scores coming from Matthew McCann, Mickey Little and Jack toner up front. Conn Fearon also going close on a few occasions. The second half was a tighter affair with the Cuhulainns attacking our goals with force, only for goalkeeper Patrick Keogh pulling of a couple of great saves. The defence of Brian Rushe, Fionn Devlin, Conall Maneely and& in particular Conor MacGinty, stood strong to stem the Cuhulainns onslaught. After this we got another few scores to run out convincing winners.
In the Cup final, we got of to the perfect start with Cain Ferguson grabbing a great goal inside the first thirty seconds after a great pass in from his older brother Luke. St.Galls responded well but half back line of Conan McCurry and Conall Devlin kept them at bay. A series of good saves and poc-outs from Rory Weir established a good platform before the break with Conor McAleer & Ben Gormley adding scores. In the second half it wasn’t all one-way traffic as St.Galls clawed their way back into the game, only for midfielders Fearghal Donaghy and Luke Ferguson to repel the charge, adding their own scores, closely followed by goals for full forwards Cormac Hughes & Cain. St.Galls threw everything at us, with Pádraig Hughes and Sean McGeary making last ditch clearances. However the Antrim lads’ efforts were in vain as the Eoghan Ruadh players responded well with more scores from Conor, Luke, Cain & Ben to run out 11point winners.
All was left for chairman to present runners up medals to Cuhulainns & St.Galls and winning captains Matthew & Luke to collect the Cup & Shiled on behalf of their teams. Well done to all the players on the great days hurling, Cup manager Christopher McGeown, Shield Managers Dan McCrudden and Stephen Ross. Thanks to the clubs who atteded and also to the Rotary Club for sponsoring the trophie and medals. Thanks to referees Tómas Colton, Paul Lavery, Pádraig Devlin & Dara Mallon, the numerous umpires & linesmen & ‘timekeeper’ Stephen Mullan. Finally to our ‘catering staff’ who, as always, provided the opposition with plenty to eat and drink. The soup in particular went down a treat in the cold weather! Special thanks to all at Tómas Uí Chléirigh GFC for the use of O’Neill Park.
After last Monday’s resumption of indoor hurling, coaching continues at Dungannon Youth Resource Centre, better known as the Youth Club. It will run every Monday up until Christmas at the following times; Under 6s, 6:00pm to 6-30pm, Under 8’s 6.30pm-7.30pm, Under 10’s 7.30pm to 8.30pm. All new players more than welcome, also new coaches welcome too, the more the merrier!!... Any queries contact Cathal McErlean.
Probably the most bored section of the club is this years under 14’s and under 16’s. After annexing all before them in Tyrone, reaching an All Ireland Féile Final (U-14) and helping Tyrone lift an All Ireland Under 14 Hurling title, the lads have been largely out of competition since the beginning of September.
Now news reaches us that the Tyrone County Hurling Development squads are set to host trials starting indoors in Omagh on Tuesday 6th November in Omagh CBS FROM 7:30 to 9:30pm. Any player who was involved in u14 / u16 hurling squads during the past season, is invited to attend these sessions as well as any other eligible player for the incoming 2013 season. Session 2 from 8.30-9.30pm is for, Eoghan Ruadh, Naomh ColumCille, Strabane Shamrocks and Beragh. All players registered should be in attendance as well as club coaches working with these players. The 2 sessions will be starting sharp as the organisers are tight for time due to having split sessions. All clubs are asked to be as punctual as possible and to inform players to be prepared to go through a full session so bringing a filled water bottle is essential.
Our minor team will take on Lisbellaw at Ballinascreen next Sunday, 12:30pm throw-in. This is the first round of the Ulster Club minor competition. All support welcome. On Sunday Eoghan Ruadh claimed a clean sweep of Tyrone hurling competitions after a walk-over against Naomh ColmCille in the minor league. Not bad for a club written off in 2011.
There will be a meeting of the Club Committee on Monday 5tht November at 8:30pm at the Hurling Fields, Donaghmore Road. All committee members are requested to attend or notify Ciarán Coyle if unable to attend.
