EOGHAN RUADH

Eoghan Ruadh had their first competitive outing at senior level on Saturday in the inaugural GAA Táin Hurling League. Described as an innovative new idea for club hurlers aimed at widening the base of club hurling, it’s designed to dovetail with the Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher inter-county championships. These competitions end in the first week of June. So there you have the GAA’s answer to promotion of the fastest most skilful summer field game in the world, get as much of it out of the way by June. Anyway, it was a losing start for Eoghan Ruadh against county champions Éire Óg, An Charraig Mhór on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-8. So plenty to work on for the coming season.

Eoghan Ruadh held their Annual Dinner and Presentation on Saturday at the Gables Restaurant. Those honoured on the night included; Eoin Quinn for Most Improved Juvenile Hurler, Edmund Goodwin for Most Improved Minor Hurler, Overall Juvenile Hurler went to Duibhir Marshall, Minor Hurler went to the outstanding Michael Maneely who starred consistently at club, college and county level. Damian Casey won the Philip Colton Memorial Shield for Overall Youth Hurler, while John Devlin picked up the Harry McBride Shield for Overall Senior Hurler. Presentations were made to the winning juvenile and minor club members who completed the domestic double as well as winning the South Antrim Minor Hurling League.

During proceedings it was announced that the Club is to dedicate its Ball-Wall at the Hurling Fields to the memory of the late Dan Morgan, a formal ceremony to take place nearer the club’s anniversary in June 2012. Indeed the first competition on the Ball Wall has just finished and it was that man John Devlin (JD) whose skill and niftiness lifted the first trophy as Ball Wall League winner.

There were presentations to Ryan Winters and Tiarnan Morgan who won AllStar awards at Lory Meagher and Ulster Colleges level. Ciarán Coyle won the Don Begley Trophy as Clubman while Tomas Cushley was inducted into the Hall Of Fame. Tommy, a familiar sight in the late sixties, seventies and early eighties across a range of club and county teams, he not only played but coached several underage teams alongside Gerry Goodwin and Peter McCaughey. Always a stylist both on and off the field there was much laughter as a slideshow of teams he played on was shown, featuring long flowing locks, a variety of headgear ranging from headbands to helmets but most frequently his beloved “monkey cap”. He maintains his interest in coaching, with the St Gall’s U10s and U12s.

Eoghan Ruadh thanks Malachy McCann, Johnny McCurry, former player Tom Corrigan and all the staff of the Gables Restaurant for a great meal and memorable night, those who helped decorate the hall, Begley’s Sports for the usual innovative mementos for winners, Cathal McErlean for the pictorial slideshow and Pearse Kelly for supplying music which kept patrons dancing to the wee hours. It wasn’t all dancing and merriment on Saturday. While the seniors battled it out with Éire Óg our U10s travelled to various venues to complete the indoor hurling blitz. Three teams competed, with one making it to the Division One final where they will play Ballycastle. The other two teams narrowly missed out on spots in the division two and division six finals, missing out by just one score on securing a final berth. Thanks to all the players, coaches and parents who provided transport.

In two weeks time Eoghan Ruadh will host the Pearse Hurling Club from Galway and both teams will compete in a four team tournament at the newly opened 4G Pitch at Mid-Ulster Sports Arena. The club welcomes anyone willing to host members of the travelling party. Contact Cathal McErlean.

Eoghan Ruadh extends deepest sympathy to the family of the late Etta Maneely (nee McCann), grandmother of Michael Maneely and former club player Andrew Donnelly. To her sons Cathal, Niall, Jim, daughters Eilís and Roisín, brothers, sisters and family circle we convey our deepest sympathy. Go ndeanfaidh Dia Trocáire ar a hanam.
