Shamrocks are once more Tyrone Junior Hurling champions after holding off a late revival from Naomh Colum Cille to emerge worthy winners.
With time running out Shamrocks looked like winning with a bit to spare, but a spirited comeback from the East Tyrone men saw them score three goals. Alas, their efforts proved in vain.
Seamus Hagan and Mark Devine traded early points before a long range free from John Connolly sailed all the way to the Shamrocks net. Devine responded with a couple of points before they got their first goal through Damien McGettigan.
Naomh Colum Cille hit back with points from Hagan but in the 24th minute a sideline ball from Gerard Gilmore went straight to the net.
Two minutes later a long delivery in from Peter O’Connor saw McGettigan break it into the path of Devine who fired low past keeper Paul Maguire to the net.
Hagan and Connolly had Naomh Colmcille points but Devine then scored his second goal to leave Shamrocks well in control at the break.
Shamrocks picked up were they had left off on the restart with Jason Patton landing a brace of points and Peter O’Connor on target as well to leave Naomh Colmcille with it all to do.
Aiden Taggart opened the East Tyrone men’s second half account before both sides were reduced to fourteen men when Ryan Dubh O’Neill and Gilmore were dismissed after a melee.
Midfielder Mark Kane hit a couple of points for Shamrocks and while Taggart replied for Naomh Colum Cille it was goals they needed at this stage.
O’Connor and Rory O’Neill traded points before O’Neill fired in a goal to begin the comeback with six minutes left to play.
Shea McKiver tagged on a point in the next attack before McGettigan and Devine both pointed for Shamrocks to leave them still with a comfortable lead.
To their credit, Naomh Colum Cille played to the end with Rory O’Neill and Taggart both finding the net within sixty seconds of each other but it was too little too late, with Kane completing the scoring with a fine long range point.
