Caledon trainer going for glory
Caledon horse trainer, Andrew Oliver will try and put the perfect seal on his 2012 sesaon when his promising colt First Cornerstone lines up in Doncaster for the Racing Post Trophy.
The promising 2 year old has been one of the revelations of the season having already landed Group 2 and listed stakes success this year over seven furlongs.
The 112 rated son of Hurricane Run and Bintalreef was purchased shortly before his sucess in the Futurity Stakes at the Curragh by the American based syndicate Team Valor.
Oliver has had a great deal of success this year competing with and at times beating the more powerful Irish stables such as Dermot Weld, Jim Bolger and even Aidan O’Brien’s famed Ballydoyle operation.
Favourite for Saturday’s race at the Doncaster track is the Aidan O’Brien trained Kingsbarn, closely followed by Jim Bolger’s Trading Leather.
Oliver’s First Cornerstone is a best priced 11/1 for the race.
The Caledon trainer has had a fantastic year drawing plaudits from many within Irish racing circles for his ability to get the best out of relatively cheap purchases.
Among Oliver’s successes this year are the 2 year old filly Sendmylovetorose who has had stake success at Group 2 and Group 3 level picking up the Cherry Hinton stake over the summer.
Oliver also enjoyed success with the three year old Punch Your Weight who landed the Irish Cambridgeshire and £47,500 on just his second start in August.
Win or lose on Saturday Oliver is one of the more remarkable stories in Tyrone sport in recent years.
