Corcoran is Ulster champ

SPRINGHILL Boxing Club’s Kevin Corcoran was an overwhelming winner in his contest for the Ulster Championship on Saturday.

Corcoran made his bout against Strabane’s Ruairi McGlinchey one way traffic from the first bell in Donegal.

In the end he finished off 29-7 winner and become a worthy Ulster champ.

Another of Moneymore’s finest, Kathryn McNamee, was fighting in the final of the Irish Intermediate Championships in Dublin with the aim of becoming the first Springhill female to bring home an Irish title.

She was up against Mairead Whitley of the Paulstown club. Neither girl was hanging around at the start of the bout and at the end of the first round the girls were locked at 4-4.

The second started with similar ferocity with Kathryn getting behind nice straight punches and edging the round by 4-3.

With fatigue beginning to take hold, the third round saw Kathryn lose out by 6-2 meaning that she would have to go into the last round and win it by four clear points.

She didn’t waste any time and threw the kitchen sink at her opponent.

But it was not to prove enough as they once again shared the points to leave it 17-14 at the bell.

This was a great fight by a boxer who should be very proud of herself.

Shaun McNamee was also in action in the quarter final against Conor Martin of Banbridge on Saturday.

The two lads had a great toe-to-toe contest where there really didn’t deserve to be a loser.

Unfortunately it was the Springhill boxer who came out on the wrong side of the score.

The Boxing Club will be closed after this Friday’s training and will re-open on January 2.

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all Springhill Boxers
