Footballing fundraiser for Eagles SO
The annual charity football match between the Married Men and Single Men of Coalisland was on Sunday of last week, with the proceeds shared out between the local St Vincent de Paul Society and the Eagles Special Olympics Club.
The event was a great success, so thank you to organisers Oliver O’Neill and David Magee as well as O’Neills bar, Mill Court restuarant, Dungannon Swifts and Coalisland Athletic for their input and the players who gave their time and energy for the cause.
Spectators were treated to a fine blend of youth and experience as a few of the footballing greats of the town shared the field with a number of today’s budding starlets, young Daryl Magee toaking to the pitch with dad David and uncles Stephen and Mark, while Joe Braden taught the younger lads how to tackle old-style.
Shane Dillon, Mickey Donnelly and Conor Doris rolled back the years, while current league players Gerard O’Neill, Shane McDonald and Shane Coney also took part.
Coalisland Athletic reserve Gerry Sweeney enjoyed a tough battle with former Celtic players and uncles Noel and Paul throughout the 90 minutes, Olly O’Neill was a constant thorn in the side of the Married Men defence. Coalisland Athletic manager Kieran Devlin showed his players how to do it by dusting down his boots for the match as well.
All in all, it was a great day’s fun and entertainment for the large crowd and the Single Men won the cup on a penalty shoot-out after a 3-3 draw.
The real winners were the charities who benefit from the game. Next year will be ten years of the Married Men v Single Men Charity Match and Oliver and David promise it will be even bigger and better. Congratulations on a well organised event and well done on helping so many charities and causes.
Eagles Special Olympics Club train every Thursday at Primate Dixon PS, Coalisland, 7-9pm, and all are welcome.
