Narrow hockey loss in City of Culture

Dungannon travelled to the City of Culture on Saturday to play Priorians, who had previously defeated the Tyrone side 1-0 in their last meeting.

The away side found themselves one nil down after only four minutes on the clock at St. Columbs Park.

A well-organised and lively Priorians team thwarted the Dungannon defence for a long period of the first half but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.

With only eleven players having travelled on Saturday, Coach Norman Purdy was forced to reshuffle the team at half time due to Sarah Winslow having sustained a leg injury early on.

This change saw Emma McMullan, pictured, pushed into mid-field and Winslow back to defence.

Unfortunately, three minutes into the half while Dungannon were still trying to settle themselves, Priorians capitalised on a one goal lead to further the distance between the two teams by adding a second goal.

However, McMullan was ready for action after this goal and became an instant threat to the Maiden City side, with her silky skills on the left hand side of the pitch she powered her way into the Priorians Circle and unleashed a strike at the keeper. There was no mistake that this ball was going into the back of the net. Game on!

Dana Bettany and McMullan both had further chances in the second half, but were both denied by the woodwork.

Dungannon grew in confidence as the game went on, winning a series of penalty corners which, despite the best efforts of Lynda McQueen, unfortunately were unable to be converted due to the solid defending by the the Priorians defensive penalty corner team.

Result: Priorians 1st XI 2-1 Dungannon 1st XI

Dungannon team: Victoria Kerr, Claire Weir, Emma Boyd, Emma McMullan, Sarah Winslow, Lynda McQueen, Georgina Mulligan, Karen Elliot, Dana Bettany and Andriea McKay.
