Rovers move on in cup
Dungannon Rovers 1 - 0 Armagh Celtic
A much improved performance from Dungannon Rovers saw them safely into that hat for the next round of the Mid Ulster Shield.
Throughout the game Mickey Hand did not have any saves to make with the Dungannon Rovers defence on top.
That is not to say Armagh Celtic did not have their share of the possession as they did have their spells throughout the game but they lacked penetration. The return of Stefan Grimes at the back for the Dungannon side added great composure to the defence and he put in an assured performance in his first game in a year.
Throughout the first half the Rovers were probing with Adam Colbert constantly sliding passes through to the front men on numerous occasions. On 20 minutes Colbert split the defence with a great through ball and Carlos hit a first time curling effort which just went past the post.
Five minutes later Colbert split the defence again when Carlos made a great run and this time he side footed the ball home. Further chances were created for Filipe Cabral and Marte Almeida but the Rovers could not extend their lead with the Celtic keeper making some fine stops.
In the second half Armagh pushed more but yet again they could not find the telling ball. As the half wore on more gaps were appearing in the Armagh defence and Kevin Grimley nearly exploited this but the keeper saved when one-on-one.
Grimley almost extended the lead when a free kick was floated into the box and Garry Maguire headed it back across goal only for Grimley to mistime his effort within the 6 yard box.
Colbert and Mervyn Kirk tried their luck with long range efforts which went close but the lead could not be extended and so the Rovers ended the game one goal to the good. It was a great team performace but the standout performances came from Grimes at the back, Cabral and Colbert at left and right midfield and Carlos up top with his phenomenal work rate.
Dungannon Rovers Reserves kept their unbeaten run going with a 6 nil victory away to Blackers Mill Reserves. The goals coming from Ben Nixon with a hat trick, Lee Kelso with a brace and Neil Farquhar with the other.
Next week the Firsts are away to Silverwood in the league with the Reserves at home to Armagh Blues Reserves in the league.
