Tobermore to ‘lock horns’ again with Kilmore Rec
Irish Cup (round 5)
Tobermore Utd 2 – 2 Kilmore Rec
TOBERMORE breezed into a comfortable 2 goal half time lead in this 5th round Irish Cup tie but a poor second half display allowed Kilmore back into the game and in the end the County Down men will feel they were very unlucky not to win the tie.
At the start of the game Kilmore seemed to be a little overawed by the occasion as Tobermore came flying out of the blocks and in form striker Ryan Doherty put the home side in front with 7 minutes gone. The visitors couldn’t handle Doherty’s pace and wee man fired home his and Tobermore’s second on the half hour mark.
Tobermore had a chance to go three up with 5 minutes gone in the second period but a poor ball into the box allowed the Kilmore defence to clear their lines and in the resulting attack they were back in the game when Philip Traynor lobbed Mark Hassan who was caught on his 18 yard line.
This seemed to give the visitors a wakeup call as they sensed a switch in control of the game. All of a sudden they started to pass the ball with some meaning and confidence and to be fair had Tobermore’s defence at times all over the place.
Hassan brought of a few good stops to keep his side ahead but could do nothing to stop a Stephen Douglas penalty that levelled things up with 13 minutes to go.
Both sides had chances to win the game to avoid an unwanted replay but none were taken and both sides will lock horns again at Fortwilliam Park on Tuesday January 22nd with a likely 1.30 kick off. Whoever gets through will travel to Institute on February 9th for a tough 6th round tie.
Tobermore United: M. Hassan, R. Winton, G. Donaldson, J. Neill, D Gardner, S. Heneghan, L. Forgrave, R. McAuley, N. Lamont, R. Doherty D. McClements, Subs. K. Steele C. McKenna, K. Lynch.
It’s back to league action for Tobermore next Saturday when they travel to Larne for another “6 pointer”. The two
sides played out a 4-4 draw at Fortwilliam Park a few weeks back so don’t be surprised to see plenty more goals.
