Wallace wins fourth NI title
TT24-175JS
Dungannon’s Patrick Wallace last night won the Northern Ireland snooker championship title for the fourth time, storming to a very convincing 10-4 victory over fellow former professional Dermot McGlinchey in an all-Tyrone decider.
In the final at the Fountain Club in Antrim, the 42 year old St.Patrick’s cueman raced into a 4-0 lead at the first interval, with his highest break of the match coming in the last of those four frames, a well-constructed 87.
After the interval, Wallace continued to dominate proceedings and several 40s and a half century enabled him to ease to an 8-0 advantage, the massive disguising the fact that it was far from one-sided.
Indeed, that was proved when he fired a 63 break in the ninth frame, only for the Castlederg man to reply with 54 to win on the pink.
When they came back for the evening session after an hour-long interval, Wallace inched closer to victory at 9-1 before McGlinchey rallied in some style with two half-centuries for 9-2, followed by 109 to go 9-3.
McGlinchey hit back from needing a snooker for 9-4 but Wallace the closed the match out at 10-4 with an early 58.
