REPRESENTATIVES from local councils and government agencies will be meeting in Dungannon on Thursday to discuss the future of Buddy Bear and the provision of conductive education school for children with cerebral palsy and motor related disorders in the Province.
Dungannon based Buddy Bear has been providing a successful model of education since 1993 with great success, many children growing into independent adults who are now working or in further education.
However, lack of funding has put the Buddy Bear School at risk of closure. Currently, the centre is operating with the help of charitable funding until a proposed solution can be found.
Lord Morrow, Mayor of Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council, who will be hosting the session of cross Councils, commented: "It is critical that we ensure the future provision of this successful education model.
"This is about people's lives and their futures, and the right of parents to choose the education that will give the greatest benefit and independence to their child. We cannot allow a lack of joined up Government approach to impact upon this future provision."
The main Government departments responsible for education, health and disability equality have been invited to the event to look at possible solutions to the way forward.
The model of education at Buddy Bear is based on a Hungarian Doctor & Professor Andra Peto and is being widely established across the UK, Europe and beyond.
