Dungannon history hidden in a tank
THE DEMOLITION of a Thomas Street building uncovered an insight into Dungannon's post-war past.
Under the former premises of Northland Upholstery was found a huge fuel tank that had remained undiscovered below the business for nearly 70 years before being uncovered by workmen who are doing rebuilding work.
Kenny Armstrong, proprietor of Northland Upholstery which moved to the Circular Road last year, joked: "We didn't know anything about the fuel tank even though spent over twenty years standing on it!
"It's as well that none of us who worked there smoked or else there might have been an awful big bang!"
The fuel tank is thought to have been used to refill lorries which transported tea, butter and sugar for the Wilson & Bell business which operated on Thomas Street for many years.
The site, beside the Housing Association building, will see another shop built on it with several apartments above it.
