ONE of the oldest and best known family businesses in Dungannon will close its doors to the public for the last time on Christmas Eve.
Two generations of the Cahoon family have sold jewellery, firearms, fishing equipment and musical instruments in Market Square and Irish Street since the 1950s.
Joseph Cahoon and his wife Margaret moved to Market Square in 1954 opening a very succes
sful jewellery business. A founder of the Howard Memorial Pipe Band, Joe also sold all types of musical instruments and remains the band chairman to this day.
His two sons, Kenny and Tom, opened their own Jewellery business in Church Street before moving to their current premises at the top of Irish Street in 1970.
When their parent's shop, where they also lived, was destroyed by a bomb during the Troubles Joe and Margaret moved upstairs in the Irish Street address.
Joe retired some years ago and was predeceased by Margaret in December 2008 after years as a great support for husband both on a business and personal level.
Kenny, the Master of Foxhounds a noted clay pigeon shot who represented Ulster and Ireland, continued to run the Irish Street business up to his death in July this year. Sadly missed by his family and his many friends he incorporated a large fishing shop upstairs because of his great love of outdoor pursuits.
This long established business will be greatly missed by the local community not just for its friendly and personal service. It also marks the end of an era of a highly respected family business.
Tom, on behalf of his father and wife Isa, would like to thank all their faithful friends for their support and many happy memories.
