AS if gracing the catwalks or the covers of glossy magazines isn’t enough to keep her busy, a Dungannon model has shown she is more than just a pretty face after her poetry was selected for a prestigious award.

Rachael Singleton, who also works as an environmental legislator, has been chosen to receive the accolade from Poetry Ireland and Trocaire.

Originally from Dungannon, but currently based in Belfast, Rachael’s work, Mining, gained her the sought after prize, which she will receive at a special award ceremony at Dublin’s National Library today, Monday.

Rachael, who was discovered as a model in her teenage years after winning the Sunday Life Cover Girl Competition, also gave a recital at the event.

Since being signed as a model with the Style Academy Agency, Rachael appeared on magazine covers and fronted advertising campaigns all over Ireland during the last 12 years.

On hearing about her poetry win, Rachael said: “Learning that I’d been selected was a proud moment. There’s something daunting about exposing your soul on a page and handing it over. I’ve never written poetry with an audience in mind but there’s still a great element of relief when it’s well received.”

Rachael plans to continue writing with a view to publishing a book of her poems in the coming year whilst simultaneously remaining a regular on the modelling scene.
