A Pro-Life movement, which handed out 20,000 campaign leaflets in the Fermanagh and South Tyrone area, has claimed the abortion issue cost Michelle Gildernew her seat.
Catherine Sewell from the St Joseph’s Pro-Life Group, which is based in Dungannon, said: “Last year the pro life movement were very active in the Dungannon area which we believe cost Sinn Fein a council seat.
“This year we have been very active throughout Fermanagh/South Tyrone and we promised we would make abortion an issue, we estimate in the 3 weeks before this election we handed out 20,000 pro life election flyers in Fermanagh/South Tyrone alone.
“Sinn Fein support for a pro abortion policy at the last Ard Fheis in Derry cost them their Fermanagh/South Tyrone seat as we predicted.
“The pro life movement is a growing force throughout Ireland and we urge all parties to adopt strong pro life policies because we will be going after them next year in the Assembly Elections.”
